Solar power is everywhere, for everyone. But it used to only be accessible for homeowners with a roof. In other words, a reasonable amount of outdoor space where you could mount your solar system (and all the complex equipment that went with it). In the last few years, there have seen a major leap forward – one that’s helping solar power help a whole new type of homeowner access clean, cost-effective, efficient power. That’s where the balcony solar system comes in. Otherwise known as mini solar systems, these compact, efficient solutions fit perfectly onto the balcony of an average apartment. And thanks to some leaps forward in technology, funding, and legislation, they’re going through a boom in popularity.
Why is balcony solar taking off?
It’s a combination of two powerful forces: better tech and bigger financial incentives.
Tech built for a balcony.
In the last few years, a wave of more compact plug-and-play solar technology has entered the market, particularly when it comes to microinverters. New forms of microinverters have been developed which use space more efficiently, making solar systems more viable for balcony owners.
It pays to be green.
In Germany, new measures are pushing more people to take advantage of solar power. For example, income from a home PV system with an output of up to 30kW (or 15kW for systems in multi-family buildings) is now exempt from income tax. Berlin, for example, grants up to 500 euros for the purchase of a plug-in solar device designed for balcony solar. Other states in Germany have their own incentive schemes. So, if you’re based in Germany and looking to implement your own solar system, make sure you check for any local government schemes before you start installation. Combined with the falling price of equipment for solar systems, these incentives have made solar power a possibility for a whole new wave of people who would otherwise have been unable to afford the technology. There are now more than 190,000 plug-in PV systems now online in Germany. And, thanks to the legislative changes above and some new proposed legislation which allows homeowners to install balcony systems with a maximum power output of up to 800W, that number is only expected to grow further.
